Benchmark 5
Benchmark 5: Academic Rigor and Readiness
Why the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) exam?
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college. There are two components of the program:
1. An assessment to diagnose student's basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
2. Developmental instruction to strengthen academic skills that need improvement.
If you are an incoming college student in Texas, you are required to take the TSI assessment to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course and/or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college-level courses.
